Moved to Spain? Register the microchip

Are you moving to sunny Spain with your dog, or is your four-legged friend staying here for an extended period? There is one administrative obligation that many dog owners overlook: officially transferring your dog's microchip to the Spanish registration system. Since the introduction of the new Spanish Animal Welfare Law (Ley de Bienestar Animal) this is legally mandatory. In this blog, we explain exactly how this works and how to avoid fines.

Why is the transfer of the microchip mandatory?

Since the introduction of the new Spanish Animal Welfare Law (Ley de Bienestar Animal), it is legally mandatory to register your dog's microchip in the Spanish system. Many expats believe that the European dog passport and registration with a database such as the NDG (Dutch Companion Animal Database) or DogID (Belgium) are sufficient. However, this is a misconception. Correctly registering the chip prevents problems and fines and ensures that your dog can be quickly traced should it go missing.

How do you arrange this easily?

The process of registering your dog's microchip in Spain is quite simple:

1. Make an appointment: Visit a local Spanish veterinarian in your area.

2. Bring the correct documents: Ensure you have the following items with you:

  • Your dog's European dog passport.
  • Your valid identification document (passport or ID card).
  • Your Spanish NIE number.
  • The exact address of your (holiday) home in Spain.

3. The registration: The veterinarian scans your dog's current chip to verify the number, enters your details into the regional system, and links the chip to your Spanish address and phone number.

4. The costs for this registration vary by region and veterinary practice, but range between €20 and €50. This is a one-time fee. After registration, you will often receive an official registration certificate or a card from the regional database (such as a RIVIA card). Keep this safe!

The next mandatory step in Spain

Now that your dog's microchip is officially registered in Spain in accordance with the law, you are ready to tackle the next legal obligation. Since the new Animal Welfare Act, every dog in Spain is required to have liability insurance.

Fortunately, this doesn't have to be expensive at all. Curious how I arranged this perfectly for my Great Dane Malakai for just €25 per year?
