Campaign against dog poop - the 'Policía de las Cacas'
Had enough of dog poop on Spanish streets? Anyone who lives in Spain, spends the winter here, or comes on vacation with their dog recognizes the scene. You walk along the beautiful Spanish boulevard or through the charming little streets. Every twenty meters hangs a trash can, specifically intended for dog poop bags. And yet... the sidewalk is sometimes littered with 'surprises'. Owners who completely ignore their four-legged friend's poop. It is the biggest frustration for virtually every dog owner who uses dutifully use bags. It not only results in dirty shoes, but it gives all dog owners in Spain a bad name. Because the real Spanish police obviously cannot patrol every street corner, we are introducing an unofficial, playful new force: the ‘Policía de las Cacas’ under the motto:

The harsh reality: what does the law say and what does it cost?
Although many people unfortunately still cut corners, the Spanish government has recently been cracking down bizarrely hard on pollution. Since the renewal of the local cleaning laws (Ordenanza de Limpieza) in the Alicante region and surrounding Costas, the fines are no longer lenient:
- Failure to clean up dog poop: In the city of Alicante, the fine for leaving dog poop behind has been increased to amounts that can reach as much as €900 per offense. In some other Spanish municipalities, this even goes up to €1,500!
- Urinating against facades: In an increasing number of Spanish municipalities, you are required to carry a bottle of water with a little soap to rinse away your dog's urine immediately. If you don't do this, you risk a fine of up to €300.
- DNA databases: In more and more Spanish cities, the genetic profile (DNA) of dogs is mandatory registered via the veterinarian. Is poop found?
- In short: Spanish legislation is crystal clear. The municipality then matches the DNA, and the fine automatically lands on your doormat.
